Post Draft Thoughts:
“The Chargers are going all in on getting Rivers a championship and used early picks on getting him another receiver and interior offensive line help. Williams will join a talented, but often injured, wide receiver core, and should help create one of the most productive wide receiver combos in the league. They got perhaps the best two guards in the draft, which perhaps more than anything else should allow them to run the ball consistently, allowing them to run out the clock when they have leads. Rochell is an underrated prospect that was the best defensive end against the run.”
2018 NFL Draft
When you use two of your first three draft picks on guards, it is not hard to see why the Chargers can’t seem to live up to their potential. They need to establish some sort of identity, and that might be starting to look like a team that can wreak havoc on opposing QB’s. If they can improve the right tackle spot, and the two highly drafted guards develop, they can counter that with a run game that can help control the clock and keep leads that Rivers often provides.
The Chargers have definitely been bitten with some bad luck, but have been fighting through some tough games and getting some close wins, for a change. They have talent at the offensive skill positions, and are just starting to see the defense develop into a formidable unit. Rivers window is closing for a championship, and they will need their luck to turnaround to give him a realistic shot.
