DRAFT 101 · UPDATED OCTOBER 21, 2026
The draft is easier to understand when the language explains the football. DraftBlaster’s learning library connects schemes, player evaluation and roster decisions to the reasoning behind a mock draft. Start with a subject below, then put the ideas to work in the weekly first round.
Start with prospect evaluation
How to Evaluate NFL Draft Prospects explains how to connect traits, production and a projected role. How to Evaluate Quarterbacks examines the position’s particular demands.
For the transition from college, read College Quarterbacks and the NFL: Beyond the Spread Label. The question is what the player can do and what he has been asked to do—not whether his offense carries a fashionable label.
Understand offensive football
NFL Offensive Schemes separates system traditions, personnel, formations and decisions within a play. Offensive Line Schemes: Zone, Gap and Man Blocking explains the responsibilities behind the running game.
How Important Is the Running Game? examines the whole offense, game situation and the difference between productive rushing and simply accumulating attempts.
Understand defensive football
NFL Defensive Schemes introduces fronts, gap responsibilities, coverages and pressure. Big Nickel and Defending 12 Personnel examines why tight ends and hybrid safeties create important draft questions.
Use these guides to move beyond “he fits the scheme.” Identify the actual assignment and the evidence that a prospect can perform it.
Understand the draft process
The Case for the NFL Scouting Combine explains how measurements and workouts add information without replacing game evidence. NFL Draft Trade Value Chart provides a first-round reference table and a worked example.
NFL Draft History and Pick Value puts the event in context. Understanding NFL Draft Statistics explains how numbers can inform an evaluation without pretending to answer every question.
Build a better mock draft
NFL Mock Draft Bad Habits sets out practical standards for a consistent forecast. Draft Fiction, Fallacies and Flubs challenges familiar claims about team needs, trading down and the best player available.
The Mock Draft FAQ answers common questions. For a different kind of study, explore our classic football reading list.
Apply the ideas
Read the 2027 NFL Mock Draft to see how team needs, prospect strengths, projected roles and alternatives fit together. Visit Articles for profiles and the Draft Notebook, or compare other perspectives in the Mock Draft Directory.
This library restores and modernizes educational subjects from the original DraftBlaster site. The guides use clearer sentences, updated terminology and specific links between the concepts. They are reference articles; weekly predictions and changing prospect information belong in the dated coverage.
